October 8, 1999 – Mark Sherman, president and chief operating officer of Blue Ridge Energies, LLC, was recently elected to the board of directors of Energy Co-Opportunity, Inc., a national cooperative organization formed to assist electric cooperatives in diversifying into other energy service lines.

Sherman also serves as a senior vice president of Blue Ridge Electric Membership Corporation, the parent company to Blue Ridge Energies. Blue Ridge Electric is one of the largest electric cooperatives in the country, with over 60,000 customers in northwestern North Carolina.

Blue Ridge Electric began efforts to diversify into additional energy lines last year by forming the Blue Ridge Energies limited liability company. After its acquisition of the former Beall Oil and Propane companies last October, Blue Ridge Energies immediately began offering propane gas, home heating oils, commercial gasoline, and related services and appliances. Blue Ridge Energies serves a 13-county area reaching from West Jefferson, North Carolina to York, South Carolina. The company has headquarters in Lenoir with a branch office in Morganton and another office opening this fall in Boone.

Sherman previously served as president of the national Thermogas Energy, based in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He lives in Lenoir with his wife, Amy, and their two daughters, Hanna and Julia.
